Curriculum summary

Mª Amalia Grau holds a Degree in Veterinary Medicine (1988) and a PhD in Veterinary Medicine (1992), both awarded by the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and a Master’s Degree in Fish Farming from the University of Girona.

She has been an FPI researcher (CICYT), both at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the Institute of Marine Sciences of Andalusia (CSIC), where she learned the techniques of histology, histopathology, histochemistry, and transmission and scanning electron microscopy.

She currently works at the Directorate-General for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs of the Balearic Islands Government, where she is a senior technician at the Marine Research and Aquaculture Laboratory (LIMIA).

She has been involved in numerous research teams that work on aspects such as marine aquaculture, artisanal and recreational fishery management, the reproductive biology of various species of fishing interest, marine reserve management, hygienic-sanitary quality of fish, pathology studies of species of commercial interest, and the diseases that affect molluscs acting as sentinels for climate change.

She has published more than 90 scientific papers on these topics—50 of them in high-impact journals—as well as several book chapters. She is co-author of the Guía de buenas prácticas de higiene alimentaria a bordo de buques pesqueros (Guide to Good Food Hygiene Practices on Board Fishing Vessels).

At present, she participates in sustainable development projects that focus on the fishing biology of commercial species, the reintroduction of species, the harmonisation of the interests of the artisanal fleet and recreational fishing, fish behaviour, and the pathogenic agent causing the extinction of the fan mussel (pinna nobilis).
