Curriculum summary

He graduated in Agricultural Engineering (Spanish Dipl.) and in Law (Spanish Lic.) at the University of the Balearic Islands (Palma, Spain); also holding a M. Ag. (Spanish Lic.) from the ETSEA (Lleida, Spain); a M. Sc. from the IREC (Ciudad Real, Spain); an Executive MBA from IE Business School (Madrid, Spain); an LL. M. in Intellectual Property and Competition Law from the MIPLC (Munich, Germany); and PhD degrees in Law and in Plant Biology from the University of the Balearic Islands. He also received training in Intellectual Property Law, and in Plant Breeders’ Rights, from: KIPO-WIPO-KAIST-KIPA, UPOV-WIPO, Wageningen University & Research – Naktuinbouw (the Netherlands Inspection Service for Horticulture), etc.

As a researcher, he specialized in interdisciplinary research between Agronomy/Biology and Law, focusing on Intellectual Property Law in the agri-food sector and Biotech & Biosafety Law. He has been visiting researcher and postdoctoral scholarship holder at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition (Munich, Germany); trainee at the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) (Angers, France); scholarship holder at the Department of Plant Breeding of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (Alnarp, Sweden), under the EU COST Action CA18111 EU STSM programme; and visiting researcher at Naktuinbouw (Roelofarendsveen, The Netherlands). He has also been visiting researcher at the CPVO (Angers, France), visiting research fellow at the Faculty of Law of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Germany), and visiting research fellow at the Oxford Intellectual Property Research Centre of the Faculty of Law of the University of Oxford, under the OECD Co-operative Research Programme: Sustainable Agricultural and Food Systems 2022 Fellowships. He has been visiting research fellow of the OIPRC of the University of Oxford on two additional occasions.

He has papers, book chapters, and books, published in national and international journals and publishing houses. He has been “Guest Associate Editor” in the plant breeding section of Frontiers in Plant Science; Principal Investigator (PI) of a special action funded by the Regional Government of the Balearic Islands; and is PI of a research project funded by the Spanish Ministry. He has also participated in national and international projects, and has been grantee of international competitive grants and scholarships.

Promoter and first Director of the Laboratory for Innovation in Agriculture (LIA) of the University of the Balearic Islands (https://lia.uib.eu/), he also promoted the creation and also co-coordinates the international research network “Intellectual Property in Agriculture” (https://ipagri.uib.eu/), comprising 8 research institutions from Spain, Italy, Poland, Sweden and Colombia; as well as a research collaboration agreement between the INAGEA, the University of Oxford, the Oxford Intellectual Property Research Centre (OIPRC) of the Faculty of Law of the University of Oxford, and the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO), to carry out research in Plant Breeders’ Rights and GIs. He is a member of the Legal Expert Group of the Observatory of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) since early 2019.

Hab. to TU, he has been granted a six-year research period (CNEAI), and two five-year teaching periods. He lectures at the University of the Balearic Islands, having also lectured abroad at master’s and PhD courses.
