Dr. Javier Gulías León

BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT

Associate Professor

Curriculum summary

Dr Javier Gulías is a senior university lecturer in plant production at the UIB Department of Biology. He began his scientific career by studying adaptation in Mediterranean plant species to water scarcity, placing particular focus on comparing endemic and non-endemic Mediterranean scrub species in the Balearic Islands. Indeed, his 2004 PhD focused on this precise topic. He then took part in different research projects looking into the response of different economically important plant species to drought, such as vines and perennial ryegrass (both for foraging and biofuels). He currently dedicates much of his research activity to studying the link between productivity and resistance to abiotic stress in plant species, looking into the causes and effects of this link, as well as identifying species with a commercial interest in Mediterranean environments, mainly for ornamental and intensive farming.

Dr Gulías’ teaching activity mainly centres on the Degree in Food and Agriculture Engineering and the Rural Environment at the University of the Balearic Islands (lecturing on the following subjects: Nursery Gardening, Gardening and Landscaping Workshop I, and Lawns). In addition to these activities, he has led different cooperation projects in Bolivia and Colombia focused on teaching and research exchanges between higher education institutions in both countries (National Herbarium of Bolivia, the Farming Academic Unit of Tiahuanacu at the Catholic University of Bolivia and the University of Nariño in Colombia). Since January 2020, he has been the head of the UIB Department of Biology.
