
Last Friday, April 11, the Institute of Agroenvironmental Research and Water Economics (INAGEA) of the University of the Balearic Islands organized the conference “Medicinal Cannabis: Current Situation and Future Perspectives”, an event that brought together academic experts, industry professionals, and institutional representatives to analyze the current state and potential of this emerging field.
Program and Highlights
The event opened with speeches by Dr. Víctor Homar, Vice-Rector for Scientific Policy and Research at UIB, followed by Dr. José M. Escalona, director of INAGEA, and Mr. Miquel Galmés, founder of Bio Island S. XXI, a pioneering company in medicinal cannabis research in the Balearic Islands.
Key sessions:
- Research and development: Dr. Mateu Fullana (INAGEA-UIB) presented advances in carbon fertilization applied to cannabis, while Dr. Lorenzo García discussed the potential of in vitro cultivation for genetic improvement. Dr. Guillermo Moreno Sanz (Khiron Life Sciences) spoke about the prescription of cannabis-based medicines in Europe.
- Legal and business aspects: Miguel Torres (Bakertilly) analyzed the current legal framework, and Iker Val (Sovereign Fields) provided an overview of the industry.
- Funding and collaboration: Pedro Calleja (Isbal) explored public-private funding opportunities.
Conclusions and Outlook
Mr. Miquel Galmés closed the event, emphasizing the importance of “rigorous scientific research and collaboration between academia and industry to ensure responsible and innovative development of medicinal cannabis.”
